Find answers to some of the questions we frequently receive below.
Am I too old for orthodontic work?
There is no such thing as being too old for orthodontic work, and some of our past patients are a testament to that. As long as your teeth are healthy and suitable for treatment, there is no age limit on adult braces. In fact, roughly one in four orthodontic patients is older than 21. Seligman Orthodontics, PLLC on Manhattan’s Upper East Side is happy to provide treatment so that you can confidently show off your bright smile at any age!
Why are adult braces and orthodontic treatment necessary?
Some patients get to a point where they feel as though they have gone their entire life without orthodontic work so it must not be necessary as an adult. But Seligman Orthodontics, PLLC recognizes the benefits of receiving treatment to correct your smile, no matter your age. Of course, adult braces will help straighten your teeth and improve your confidence, but that is far from the sole benefit of receiving orthodontic work as an adult. If your teeth are crooked, it can make it more difficult to brush and clean them adequately. By taking measures to straighten your smile, it will make it easier to keep your teeth clean and healthy for the long-term.
What do I do if my teeth are misaligned even after braces?
Some of our patients have expressed concern about what to do if they wore braces as a teen but now have teeth out of place as an adult. That is not an entirely uncommon issue, and a simple orthodontic tune-up is likely in order. Seligman Orthodontics, PLLC is well equipped to address such problems and restore your smile!
How do adult and child orthodontic treatments differ?
Most orthodontic problems can be fixed as easily for adults as they are for children. However, there may be complicating factors that will need to be addressed by Seligman Orthodontics, PLLC. Among the factors that could cause adult treatment to differ from adolescent treatment are: Jaw discrepancy – Jaw discrepancy problems may arise if an adult’s lower jaw does not align with his or her upper jaw, resulting in a severe bite problem. Because an adult’s jaw is no longer growing, the distance that teeth can be moved with braces may not correct this problem. Surgery may be necessary to establish a proper bite relationship. Gum or bone loss – Adults are more likely to have experienced periodontal breakdown than children. Such issues can lead to inflammatory responses within the gums and require the assistance of a periodontist throughout orthodontic treatment. Damaged or missing teeth – You can still receive adult braces if you have missing teeth or crowns, but it complicates the treatment. A dentist may need to restore damaged teeth to help them function properly during or after orthodontic work. Seligman Orthodontics, PLLC can work around crowns, bridges, or implants, but we will likely collaborate with your dentist to prevent future issues.
How long will I need to wear adult braces?
Adults typically need to wear braces longer than children and adolescents because their teeth and bones are no longer growing, which means they shift slowly. The average length of time for a treatment plan involving adult braces is 18 months to three years, though a retainer may be necessary following removal of the braces to maintain the results. However, that timeframe can be shortened to as few as six months for adults who only want to make cosmetic improvements to their front teeth. You will need to visit our Manhattan office every two months or less for routine orthodontic work and to ensure your teeth are reacting to treatment as they should.
Are adult braces affordable?
Adult braces are becoming increasingly affordable. We recognize that there are many elements at play, including the type of braces, length of your treatment plan, and any complicating factors. But Seligman Orthodontics, PLLC takes satisfaction in helping you achieve your perfect smile. For that reason, we will devise a convenient and reasonable plan for your orthodontic work so that you are soon proud to show off your pearly whites.
How much does Invisalign cost?
Costs vary dramatically based on various factors, such as the unique nature of your case, the amount of aligners you’ll need, and your insurance. Once you’ve had your first consultation, Dr. Seligman will be able to give you an accurate price.
What are the differences between Invisalign aligners versus traditional braces?
Braces are essentially metal brackets which are glued to your teeth and then are tied with wire and rubber bands. Meanwhile, Invisalign is almost invisible and is made from BPA-free plastic. Both options straighten your teeth, but with different benefits. Braces are often more painful, and your food options can be more limited. Speak to your orthodontist to find out which choice is best for you.
How do I keep my aligners clean?
Simply brush them with a toothbrush and rinse them in lukewarm water—the more frequently your brush them, the cleaner they will stay in the long term!
Will I have to wear a retainer after treatment?
Yes, no matter whether you have braces or Invisalign, your results will only last with a retainer. However, down the road you will only have to use it at night.
